The Foundation has decided to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 150 birth anniversary. Although Pala has played a significant role in the Freedom Struggle, there are no befitting memorials here, whereas adjacent towns like Kottayam, Vaikom and Thodupuzha have Gandhiji's monuments. It was in this context, also as part of Gandhiji's 150th birth anniversary, 100 years of his visit to Travancore renamed Kerala in 1956, and 75th year of India’s independence, that Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation planned a Gandhi Square and Statue at Pala.
Our main objective is to propagate the message and contributions of the great freedom fighters to later generations. The Gandhi Square and Statue have come up at a space, owned by the PalaMunicipal Council, on the road to the Lawyers' Chamber at Moonnani, forking left from theKottayam-Ettumanoor-Poonjar State Highway. The Gandhi Square is built on a stretch of land at the middle of the road. A 4.5-ft tall statue is erected at the centre of the Square. The construction and upkeep of the Gandhi Square and Statue have been vested with the Gandhi Square Trust, Pala, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation.
